FAQ: Matching Hard Drive PCBs

How do I find my hard drive's board number?

The board number is printed on the PCB itself, not on the drive label. Seagate boards use a 9-digit number starting with 100 (for example 100535704 REV C). Western Digital boards use 2060-xxxxxx-xxx (for example 2060-771961-001 REV A). Hitachi/HGST boards often show 220 0Axxxxx or 110 0Axxxxx, and Samsung boards BF41-xxxxxA. Take a clear photo of your board and compare it with our listings.

What needs to match besides the board number?

Match the board number and its revision (REV A, REV B, etc.) to your original PCB. Where shown, also compare the firmware version and the site code or MLC/date code on the drive label. Each listing shows the drive model and details the board came from.

Do I need to transfer the ROM/U12 chip?

Usually, yes. Most modern drives store unique adaptive data in a ROM chip (often marked U12 on WD boards, or an 8-pin serial flash chip on Seagate boards). Move the ROM chip from your original PCB to the replacement, or copy its contents with a programmer. Without this step the drive usually will not spin up or be detected correctly.

Will a PCB swap fix a clicking or beeping drive?

Usually not. A PCB swap helps when the board itself is damaged: a power surge, burnt components, a broken connector, or a drive that is completely silent. Clicking, beeping, grinding or a drive that spins but is not detected usually means head, motor or firmware problems inside the drive. A replacement PCB will not fix those, and powering the drive again can cause more damage.
